Basic shapes. Cylinder.

Author Elena Perelman

It's a common practice to start drawing with splitting the objects into basic shapes. Today we are focused on drawing a cylinder - the most common shape.

In general, every lightened cylinder consists of several zones:
highlight - the white spot from the direct light
light - lightened area
shadow or mid-tone - the area between the light and core shadow
core shadow - the darkest area
cast shadow - the fallen shadow

Use 2H or H pencil for contours and HB, B, 2B ... 4B pencils for shading

Start your drawing with the axis, or center line.

Draw 2 lines for cylider edges - they are at the same distance from the cetral line.

Draw 2 ovals: one for the top and another for a bottom. Make sure the bottom oval is bigger that the top one.

Erase lines you don't need and leave just contour lines.

If source of light is in the top left corner shades will be like that: mid-tone, light, mid-tone, shadow, mid-tone and reflection.
